Music as Worship
Music is a gift from God, and as such it is an integral part of our church and worship life. Psalm 98 tells us to “Sing a new song…shout to the Lord, all the earth…with the harp, and the sound of singing.”
Here at First Presbyterian we have several ways to do just that!
The Chancel Choir is a mixed-voice ensemble that sings most Sundays. They rehearse from 6:30-7:45 pm on Wednesday evenings, and childcare is provided from 6-8 pm. There is no audition to be a part of this group, and additional singers in all sections are desired and would be welcomed, from high school age up. Special musical presentations occur from time to time and may feature seasonal music or larger works. The group is directed by Daniel Fry and accompanied by Kristy Olefsky.
Chancel Bells rehearse on Sunday mornings after the service, from 11:30-12:30. They ring 3-4 times in the Fall and Spring. New ringers as well as subs are needed at this time. Some note and rhythm-reading ability will be helpful for this group, but it is not required. No audition is needed, and both youth and adults are welcome in this group. This group is directed by Daniel Fry.
Children’s musical activities/choir activities take place during Sunday morning children’s ministry time. These may involve learning songs, percussion activities, and other activities using music to help them grow in faith and for participation in worship. Katie Flood and Daniel Fry collaborate with this ministry.
There is a place for you in the music ministry at First Presbyterian! We strive to represent the diverse repertoire of musical styles and influences with organ, piano, voice, bells, brass and more, from traditional anthems to more contemporary expressions of faith. If you have questions or are interested in being involved, please contact Daniel Fry, Director of Music Ministries at [email protected], or call the church office at (479) 273-5450.
